TYPE: Three-seat biplane/kitbuilt.
PROGRAMME: UMF indicates Continental R-670 or W-670 engine; 1934 open cockpit; tandem cockpits. Originals built 1934 and 1935. Current series prototype (N2021N) built 1999. Demonstrator N30056, built 2002, registered as Waco YMF, having Jacobs R755-B2 engine (for which ZMF more accurate designation).
COSTS: Kit US$80,000, excluding engine, propeller and instruments.
DESIGN FEATURES: Single-bay biplane; upper plane mounted on cabane and N-type interplane struts and braced by flying and drag wires. Wire-braced empennage. Wing section Clarke Y.
FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional and manual. Horn-balanced elevators and variable incidence tailplane. Ground-adjustable rudder trim tab. Ailerons on all wings, with vertical connecting rods.
STRUCTURE: Fuselage of pre-welded 4130 steel square-section tube and wooden longerons; aluminium wings. Fabric covering, but metal cladding forward of cockpits on spine and on wing leading edges.
LANDING GEAR: Tricycle type; fixed. Mainwheels size 7.50-10; Maule steerable tailwheel 2.80/2.50-4. Hydraulic brakes. Optional floats. Rubber-in-tension suspension.
POWER PLANT: One 205 kW (275 hp) Jacobs R755-B2 or 164 kW (220 hp) Continental W-670 seven-cylinder radial, driving a Sensenich two-blade wooden propeller. Fuel in two foam-filled upper wing tanks, total 189 litres (50.0 US gallons; 41.6 Imp gallons) of which 182 litres (48.0 US gallons; 40.0 Imp gallons) are usable. Oil capacity 13 litres (3.5 US gallons; 2.9 Imp gallons).
ACCOMMODATION: Pilot in rear cockpit; two passengers side by side in front cockpit, with single set of controls. Option of windscreen (only) ahead of each cockpit or fully enclosed cockpits, with rear-sliding front canopy and forward-sliding rear canopy.
