SPERRY

Elmer Sperry’s son Lawrence formed Lawrence Sperry Aircraft Co. June 1919 at Farmingdale, Long Island. First product sport biplane with folding wings and 2 x BMW motor cycle engines each driving tractor propeller, second triplane bomber amphibian (pusher Liberty 12). Third was Messenger, designed by Army Engineering Division for front-line liaison, tiny biplane with 60-hp Lawrance, 42 built of which most were designated M-1 or M-1A, 8 becoming radio-controlled MAT (Messenger aerial torpedo). Sperry drowned in Channel 1923 after Messenger force-landing.
