BURGESS

Entitled The W. Starling Burgess Co. and Curtis (no relation to Curtiss), this company was formed 1 February 1911. Initially built licensed designs by Farman, Curtiss, Grahame-White, Dunne and Wright, small numbers being sold to Army and Navy. Model I seaplane (60 hp, 2 pusher screws) used by Army in Philippines 1913-15. Six Model H trainers were Army’s first tractor aircraft. More than 20 Model L and Model S trainers were built as land- and seaplanes before Burgess became division of Curtiss 1917.
