TYPE: Four-seat kitbuilt twin.
PROGRAMME: Project began in December 1997; first flight October 1999; after almost 100 hours, prototype shipped to Dubai for one year of field tests. Initial eight aircraft were reported to be in production by 2000. Following Dubai trials, prototype refurbished at Kiev and registered to John Hunter of Sebring, Florida, in April 2001. CURRENT VERSIONS: A-28: As described.
SA-28: US production version. Several changes as detailed below. Target max level speed of 162 kt (300 km/h; 186 mph) with constant-speed propellers; altered fuselage shape. Optional nosewheel configuration with and without retraction option.
COSTS: US$120,000 (2002).
DESIGN FEATURES: Low-wing, twin-engined configuration with T tail; sole four-seater in current Aeroprakt range.
Unswept, constant-chord wings of P-IIIa-15 section; thickness/chord ratio 15 per cent; washout 5o; chamfered wingtips. Dihedral 5o; incidence 5o; twist 3o. US production version has NACA 633-618 laminar flow aerofoil.
FLYING CONTROLS: Manual. Conventional ailerons, slotted flaps and rudder; single-piece, mass-balanced elevator. Flight-adjustable trim tabs on fin and rudder. Flap deflections 0, 14, 33 and 40o.
STRUCTURE: Composites cabin with riveted 2024-T3 aluminium monocoque rear fuselage; tailplane, of composites ribs and skin built on metal spar, is reinforced version of A-20 unit; aluminium rudder structure with Stitts Poly-Fiber covering. Aluminium wings with fabric-covered ailerons. Composites engine cowlings and wheel fairings. Aluminium 6061-T256 mainwheel legs.
LANDING GEAR: Tailwheel type; fixed. Mainwheels size 6.00-6; tailwheel 260x85. Speed fairings on each main unit. Citroën motorcar shock-absorbers.
POWER PLANT: Two 59.6 kW (79.9 hp) Rotax 912 UL flat-fours. Fuel capacity 180 litres (47.5 US gallons; 39.6 Imp gallons) in mid-wing tanks. US versions have 73.5 kW (98.6 hp) Rotax 912 ULS engines and total of 91 litres (24.0 US gallons; 20.0 Imp gallons). Aeroprakt three-blade ground-adjustable pitch propellers.
ACCOMMODATION: Up to four persons in side-by-side pairs. Two door/windscreens open forwards on centreline hinges.
