PETLYAKOV

Vladimir Mikhailovich Petlyakov became world leader on aluminium-alloy structures, especially wings, and played major role in Tupolev (CAHI) TB-1, TB-3 and other programmes, managing entire design of TB-4 (ANT-16) and ANT-20. Appointed chief of ZOK to manage ANT-42 heavy bomber, later called Pe-8, but arrested 1937 on similar nonsensical charges to Tupolev, imprisoned at TsKB-29 where he created VI-100 which led to Pe-2 bomber (18 November 1940), 11,427 built of many versions. Pe-8 heavy bomber (27 December 1936) led to only 79, ending 1941. Petlyakov killed in crash of Pe-2 12 January 1942; replaced by Izakson, Putilov and finally Myasishchyev before OKB shut 1946.
