TYPE: Three-seat lightplane.

PROGRAMME: Fifteen Mushshaks supplied complete from Sweden; 10 then assembled from SKD kits and 82 from CKD kits at Risalpur between 1975 and 1981; completely indigenous production followed, with 180 delivered by December 1996; 113 repaired at Kamra including 100 from 1980 to 1996; engines, instruments, electrical equipment and radios imported; complete airframe manufactured locally. Shahbaz (prototype 86-5147; first flight July 1987; English name Falcon) received US FAR Pt 23 certification 1989. Super Mushshak (see Current Versions) introduced 1997.

CURRENT VERSIONS: Mushshak: Standard production version; used for training, communications and observation; more than half a million hours flown by late 1999. AMF then upgrading first 16 (of 36) to Super Mushshak for PAF; 22 delivered by January 2003.
Shahbaz: As Mushshak except for 157 kW (210 hp) Teledyne Continental TSIO-360-MB turbocharged engine; four completed by September 1993; no further examples since then.
Super Mushshak: Further increase in power by adopting IO-540 flat-six engine. Prototype 95-5385X made first flight 15 August 1996. Revealed at Dubai Air Show in November 1997, at which time five completed. Pakistan Army has reportedly ordered 150, for delivery after completion of PAF order.

CUSTOMERS: Total of 315, comprising 15 imported aircraft plus 280 Mushshaks, 16 Super Mushshaks and four Shahbaz acquired/produced by May 2001. Mushshak deliveries to Iran in 1988-91; six supplied to Syria and three to Oman in 1994. Last-named became first export customer for Super Mushshak in December 2001; these delivered in mid-2002. Iranian Air Force also reported to have ordered 16 Supers. Sale of 30 to 40 Super Mushshaks to Saudi Arabia was reportedly still being negotiated in late 2002.

DESIGN FEATURES: Based on Swedish Saab Safari/Supporter, but without latter's armament option. Optimised for military support (originally including light attack) from semi-prepared airstrips; wing position aids ground observation.
Wing thickness/chord ratio 10 per cent; dihedral 1° 30'; incidence 2° 48'; sweepforward 5° from roots.

FLYING CONTROLS: Manual. Mass-balanced ailerons with servo tab in starboard unit; rudder with trim tab; all-moving mass-balanced tailplane with large anti-balance tab. Electrically actuated plain sealed flaps; leading-edge slots.

STRUCTURE: All-metal, except for GFRP tailcone, engine cowling panels, wing strut/landing gear attachment fairings and fintip.

LANDING GEAR: Non-retractable tricycle type. Cantilever composites spring main legs; Cessna oleo-pneumatic nosewheel shock-strut. Goodyear wheels and Flight Custom tyres, size 6.00-6 (6 ply) on mainwheels and 5.00-5 (6 ply) on steerable (±30°) nosewheel. Tyre pressure (all units) 2.07 bar (30 lb/sq in). Parker Hannifin hydraulic disc brakes on main units.

POWER PLANT: Mushshak: One 149 kW (200 hp) Textron Lycoming IO-360-A1B6 flat-four engine, driving a Hartzell HC-C2YK-4F/FC7666A-2 two-blade constant-speed metal propeller.
Super Mushshak: One 194 kW (260 hp) Textron Lycoming IO-540-V4A5 flat-six; Hartzell HC-C2YK-1BF two-blade constant-speed propeller.
Fuel (both versions) in two integral wing fuel tanks, total capacity 178 litres (47.0 US gallons; 39.1 Imp gallons), of which 159 litres (42.0 US gallons; 35.0 Imp gallons) are usable. Oil capacity (both) 7.5 litres (2.0 US gallons; 1.6 Imp gallons). From 10 to 20 seconds inverted flight (limited by oil system) permitted.

ACCOMMODATION: Side-by-side adjustable seats, with provision for back-type or seat-type parachutes, for two persons beneath fully transparent upward-hinged canopy. Dual controls standard. Space aft of seats for 100 kg (220 lb) of baggage (with external access on port side) on optionally, a rearward-facing third seat. Upward-hinged door, with window, beneath wing on port side. Cabin heated and ventilated in Mushshak, air conditioned in Super Mushshak.

SYSTEMS: Hydraulic reservoir for mainwheel brakes, 28 V DC electrical system (70 A alternator and 70 Ah battery).

AVIONICS: Comms: KT 76A/78A ATC transponder; KA 134 audio panel.
Flight: KX 125 nav/com; KLX 135 GPS/com; KR 87 ADF.
Instrumentation: Provision for full blind-flying instrumentation.

EQUIPMENT: Provision for six underwing attachment points, inner two stressed to carry up to 150 kg (330 lb) each and outer four up to 100 kg (220 lb) each. Options include ULV crop-spraying kit, target towing kit, or underwing supply/relief containers.
