TYPE: Regional jet airliner.

PROGRAMME: Japan Aircraft Development Corporation is co-ordinating indigenous designs for a next-generation regional jet (NGRJ) airliner, with both Kawasaki and Mitsubishi offering competing projects. First provisional details of Mitsubishi design revealed in 2004, then as T-tailed, rear-engined design (two 30,7 kN; 6,900 lb st class turbofans) in 30-passengers class. By 2006, this had transmuted into stretched-fuselage, low-tailed design with underwing podded engines and aimed at 70/90-passenger market. Late 2006 was planning to fix engine, avionics and equipment configurations by March 2007, leading to launch in 2008 (given appropriate support from industrial partners) and certification in 2012.

CURRENT VERSIONS: Projected as MJ-70 and MJ-90, indicating approximate passenger capacity.

DESIGN FEATURES: See accompanying illustrations.

Following data all provisional:

POWER PLANT: Two “brand new” (sic) turbofans, pod-mounted under wings; each 57.8 kN (13,000 lb st) in MJ-70, 66.3 kN (14,900 lb st) in MJ-90. Rolls-Royce and General Electric showing interest in participation.
