Kawanishi engineering works at Kobe established aircraft division 1921, building varied selection of types (mail-carrier, racer, passenger seaplane, trainer, fighter and planned trans-Pacific aircraft) as K-1–K-12 by 1928. In November 1928 Kawanishi Kokuki Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha formed, moving to new factory at Narao 1930, gradually adding other factories at Konan and Himeji, all in Osaka/Kobe area. Among some 25 subsequent types, most important were E7K reconnaissance biplane, H6K and H8K 4-engined flying-boats and N1K1-J and 2-J fighters. Company reformed 1949 as Shin Meiwa.
