Swiss H.J. Stieger developed monoplane wing of metal single-spar construction and designed light twin to test it; left Beardmore and formed Mono Spar Co. November 1928. Success of resulting Gloster-Monospar S.S.1 led to formation of General Aircraft, absorbing Mono Spar Co. 21 February 1931.
