NIEUPORT

Nieuport & General Aircraft Co. established November 1916 at Cricklewood, London NW2, as one of group managed by Samuel Waring of Waring & Gillow, furniture manufacturers (others being Alliance and BAT). Original purpose to produce Nie.11 replaced by manufacture of Camel. After H.P. Folland and Major Heckstall-Smith joined early 1917, N&GA undertook design work, producing B.N.1 (initials from British Nieuport, though that was not firm's name), Nighthawk fighters and London bomber. Nighthawk served RAF post-war and was starting point for Gloucestershire company.
