POTEZ

In 1913 Henry Potez was Dorand’s assistant at STA. After war broke out he and Bloch were assigned to help Capt. Etévé, but in 1916 they teamed up with Louis Coroller to found Société d’Etudes Aéronautiques at Suresnes, making Spad VIIs and designing SEA.1. Neither this nor SEA.2 and 3 were improvements on existing types, but SEA.4 was excellent. Potez, Bloch and Bessonneau formed Compagnie Anjou Aéronautique at Angers to build 1,000, but Armistice cut output to 115, and company wound up. Potez believed in a market for civil aircraft, so in 1919 formed Aéroplanes Henry Potez at Aubervilliers. Refurbished SEA.4s, and produced improved SEA.7, soon called Potez VII, with cabin for 2 passengers, 25 going into service on Compagnie Franco-Roumaine. This was start of 40 years in which number of fresh designs probably exceeded in number and variety those of all other constructors. Many were produced in remarkable quantity. Original VIII 2-seater ran to 100, 4-passenger IX reached 33, XV reconnaissance biplane reached 334 plus 135 built in Poland, improved XXVII reached 72 plus 155 built by PWS in Poland, and XXV, better known as Potez 25, 2-seat military biplane, beat all other between-the-wars types with production of about 3,770 in France by Potez, ANF Les Mureaux and Hanriot, and at least 597 made under licence in other countries. Other types were 29 5-passenger biplane (157), 32/33 monoplane (206), 36 light monoplane (about 300), 37/39 fighter-reconnaissance (262), 43 3-seat monoplane (161), 54 heavy bomber (147 plus 49 for Spain and 59 improved 542s), 56 twin-engined monoplane (72), 58 ambulance/observation (214), 60 simple 2-seater (155), 62 airliner and 65 military version (23+15), and 63 series of modern twin-engined fighter/bomber/recon aircraft (1,384). This list ignores scores of other types, from flying-boats (see also CAMS) to racers, nor does it mention substantial business in Potez aero engines. Under 1936 nationalization Potez factory at Sartrouville (Paris) and Méaulte (Potez’s home town) were taken over by SNCA du Nord, Potez becoming head of group. Berre, near Marseilles, went to SNCASE.
