NORD

Société Nationale de Constructions Aéronautiques du Nord formed January 1937 on enforced nationalization of defence industries, also known as SNCA du Nord or SNCAN. Took over CAMS, most of Potez, Les Mureaux and parts of Breguet and Amiot. Henry Potez was political animal, embraced nationalization and so was first Administrator of SNCAN. Continued existing programmes, and in Second World War produced Potez 63, Potez-CAMS 161, Do 24, Bf 108 and prototypes of Me 208. In 1945 continued Do 24, developed Bf 108 into Nord 1000 and began family of light aircraft continued with Me 208-derived 1100 Noralpha and 1200 Norécrin. Caudron-Renault was added 1945, Bourges factory of liquidated SNCAC 1949, Lyon-Villeurbanne factory of Arsenal 1953 and SFECMAS December 1954. Major programmes of 1950s included NC.856 military liaison and 4-seat tourer, 1402 Gerfaut and 1500 Griffon supersonic research aircraft, 1400 Noroit patrol amphibian, 2501 Noratlas military freighter, 3202 trainer and 3400 STOL observation aircraft. Called Nord Aviation from January 1958, group was augmented by agreement with Max Holste 1961 which effectively gave Nord former MH.262 programme. Produced wings for Dassault Mirage and major partner in Transall. Lost identity on merger into Aerospatiale 1 January 1970.
