DORAND

In 1916 Lt.-Col. Dorand, director of STAé (Section Technique de l'Aéronautique) issued requirement for 2-seat reconnaissance aircraft. Designed by Capt. Georges Lepère, AR was built in large numbers by STAé at Chalais-Meudon, and by private contractors, as AR.1 and AR.2 with differing engines and wing span. US Army used 142 as advanced trainers, and over 350 found (usually brief) civil use post-war. Took name of director, who had himself designed unsuccessful aircraft designated DO.1 in 1913.
