Government Aircraft Factories at Fishermen’s Bend, Port Melbourne, had various names in former times, such as Beaufort Division, Department of Aircraft Production, and Aircraft Factories, Division of Aircraft Production, Department of Defence Production. Products included Avro Lincoln, EE Canberra and Mirage III-O, Malkara and Ikara missiles and Jindivik targets. Seeking civil business, factories decided on name GAF and produced Nomad twin-turboprop STOL utility transport, 170 built 1971-84. GAF reconstituted as private ATA (Aerospace Technologies of Australia Pty Ltd), effect from 1 July 1987. This again changed to ASTA.
