CESSNA AIRCRAFT COMPANY (Subsidiary of Textron Inc)

Founded by late Clyde V Cessna 1911; incorporated 7 September 1927; acquired by General Dynamics as wholly owned subsidiary 1985; acquisition by Textron announced February 1992.
Suspended manufacture of some piston-engined light aircraft types in mid-1980s; plans for resumed production of Cessna 172 Skyhawk, 182 Skylane, 206 Stationar and T206 Turbo Stationar announced 1994; 46,450 m² (500,000 sq ft) new factory at Independence Municipal Airport, Montgomery County, Kansas, opened 3 July 1996 to house final assembly, painting, flight test, engineering, finance, marketing and human resource operations for single-engined light aircraft range. First new model 172 rolled out 6 November 1996.
Owned subsidiaries include Cessna Finance Corporation in Wichita and Cessna-Columbus Division in Columbus, Georgia. Sold 49 per cent interest in Reims Aviation of France to Compagnie Française Chaufour Investissement (CFCI) February 1989; Reims continues manufacturing Cessna F406 Caravan II.
Total 185,188 aircraft produced by 30 September 2003. Total of 944 delivered in 2002, comprising 599 single-engined piston aircraft, 80 Caravans and 305 Citations. Business jet production 305 in 2002, falling to about 180 to 195 in 2003. 3,000th piston single from resumed production, a 182T Skylane, delivered in early February 2001; 3,000th Citation executive jet, a Citation X, delivered 19 November 1999. Workforce about 9,900 in May 2003. Order backlog stood at US$4.9 billion at the end of 2002.
