KAZAN

KAZANSKY VERTOLETNYI ZAVOD OAO

GAZ-387 founded in Leningrad in 1940 and re-established at Kazan on 15 August 1941 following evacuation. Built 11,344 Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes up to 1947, when production turned to combined harvesters. Since 1951, however, Kazan (KVZ) has marketed and built Mil helicopters comprising 30 Mi-1s, 3,257 Mi-4s, 4,066 Mi-8s, 2,620 Mi-8M/Mi-17s, 273 Mi-14s and (up to 2001) 1,094 Mi-8MTV/Mi-17-1Vs. Exports began in 1956 and now encompass over 80 countries and some 4,000 aircraft; the Mi-17 accounts for 1,200 exports to 30 countries.
Kazan became a joint stock company in 1994, then owned 38 per cent by the state, 62 per cent by its employees; now 29.9 per cent state-owned. At the 1995 Paris Air Show, Kazan exhibited a mockup of the first product of its own newly formed (1993) design office, the Ansat light multipurpose helicopter. Modifications and upgrades to Mi-17 have generated new business for Kazan. Russian certification for helicopter design awarded February 1997. A second light helicopter, the Aktai, was revealed at Moscow in August 1997. In February 2003, Kazan offered to establish a production line for the Mi-52 if Mil is unable to secure funding. Kazan is also a co-founder of Euromil, with Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, Eurocopter and Klimov, and is responsible for manufacturing parts for, and assembling, the Mi-38 prototypes.
