Founded in 1936 as GAZ-153, NAPO has built about 36,000 aircraft of many types, including I-16, Yak-7, Yak-9, MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-19, Yak-28, Su-9, Su-15 and, from 1972, Su-24 multirole combat aircraft. The plant is wholly state-owned, but 74.5 per cent of shares are to be transferred to Sukhoi Aviation Holding Company. NAPO's current products include the Antonov An-38 (available with local TVD-20 engines from 2002) and Sukhoi Su-32 (Su-27IB) as well as motor boats. Is promoting Su-24 modernisation programmes for export customers. Will build Su-49 piston trainer and was nominated in March 2003 to produce the Sukhoi Russian Regional Jet, beginning in 2006.
NAPO also rebuilds historic aircraft from severely damaged originals, most recent being a Polikarpov I-15bis (registered FLARF-02915) from wreckage recovered in Karelian region.
