Lt. John William Dunne produced man-lifting kites at HM Balloon Factory, Farnborough, following with D.1 biplane hang-glider of tailless sweptback form. Experiments with added engines led to D.4, tested by ad hoc Blair Atholl Aeroplane Syndicate. Short Brothers built D.5, tested at Eastchurch 1910, leading to D.8, D.10 and derived designs by Burgess Aircraft. D.8 was excellent, inherently stable aircraft.
