TYPE: Tandem-seat sportplane kitbuilt.

PROGRAMME: Earlier Super Chipmunk modification of surplus military aircraft, with Teledyne Continental IO-360 engine, undertaken by Jean-Paul Huneault, achieved only seven sales.
Prototype of current Super-Chipmunk (C-GLSC), with similar power plant, constructed in 1998-99 from DHC-1 wings and rear fuselage, but with steel tube centre-section providing additional accommodation for pilots of above average height and/or girth. Shown, incomplete, at Oshkosh in 1998; first flight 2 September 1999. Debut at Sun 'n' Fun, Lakeland, Florida, April 2000, when all-new fuselage of third aircraft also exhibited. Lost on 14 July 2002 when wing reportedly detached in flight. Complete airframe will be available for assembly from kit.

CUSTOMERS: First production aircraft (002) bought by Andre Gauther, but had not been registered in Canada by early 2002; a third has been sold to Sean deRosier of California.

COSTS: Kit US$34,000 (2003).

DESIGN FEATURES: Primary trainer adapted for civilian sporting use. Low wing and mid-mounted tailplane, both tapered; elliptical fin/rudder. Super-Chipmunk features new internal structure and Canadian DHC-1 standard single-piece canopy and lack of strakes ahead of tailplane. Quoted build time 2,000 hours.

FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional and manual. Horn-balanced rudder and elevators. Flaps. Flight-adjustable trim tab on starboard elevator; ground-adjustable tab on rudder.

STRUCTURE: Metal throughout, except fabric-covered wings (except roots and leading edges), rudder, ailerons, elevator and flaps and composites engine cowling, wheel fairings and wingtips. Kit includes pre-welded 4130 steel fuselage frame and T6736 centre-section, plus aluminium (6061T6 and 2024T3) rear fuselage.

LANDING GEAR: Tailwheel type; fixed. Mainwheels size 6.00-6. Mainwheel brakes.

POWER PLANT: One 157 kW (210 hp) Teledyne Continental IO-360 flat-six driving a Hartzell F8459A-4 two-blade propeller. Alternative engines between 112 and 224 kW (150 and 300 hp) with fixed-pitch or constant-speed propellers. Fuel in wingroot tanks, combined capacity 114 litres (30.0 US gallons; 25.0 Imp gallons) normal, 189 litres (50.0 US gallons; 41.7 Imp gallons) optional. Oil capacity 9.5 litres (2.5 US gallons; 2.0 Imp gallons).

ACCOMMODATION: Two in tandem, beneath single-piece, rearward-sliding canopy with fixed windscreen. Single cockpit.
